Francophone autobiographical graphic novels in the Czech Republic: reception and translation from a multimodal perspective

This thesis examines the reception and translation of francophone autobiographical comics in the Czech Republic. It is based on theoretical knowledge from the fields of theory and history of autobiographical comics, multimodality theory and comics translation. Based on data from library and book databases, and catalogues, it presents an inventory of autobiographical comics published on the Czech book market between 1990 and 2022. This inventory is supplemented by data from semi-structured interviews with Czech publishers, from online reader databases, public libraries, and media; the analysis of these sources is the starting point for a detailed description of the situation and position of francophone autobiographical comics on the Czech market. According to the data collected, francophone autobiographical comics account for approximately 20 % of the autobiographical comics offer in the Czech Republic, and Czech-published francophone autobiographical comics do not accurately reflect the diversity of this type of work abroad.
